Cushendale Woollen Mills
Cushendale is one of the two vertical Irish woollen mills still operating today, producing high-quality, genuine textiles at our historic mill using the fleece of Irish sheep. Cistercian monks founded the first mill in 1204, and the Cushen family has been weaving since 1778. Explore our storied mill to witness how they design and produce fine custom yarns and textiles from Irish mohair, lambswool, and wool.
A brand-new retail experience featuring textiles against the backdrop of a historically significant working mill, complete with interpretation panels and a film that teaches visitors everything there is to know about this age-old craft.
Experience the Mill: Cushendale Woollen Mills provides a unique opportunity to visit one of Ireland's oldest operational woollen mills. Here, you can discover the history of the Cushen family, which dates back to 1778, the unique process of the mill, and even witness a spinning mule from the 1900s that is still in use. Graiguenamanagh has been associated with wool since 1204. The last mill producing fabric from Irish fleece is Cushendale Woollen Mills, a six-generation family enterprise. You can schedule a behind-the-scenes tour of the mill by making advance arrangements with them. Well worth the trip.
Visit Our Wool Store: The Cushendale Wool Store is open daily and offers a large selection of Irish wool products made in our mill. Our exquisite textiles are all produced using time-honored methods at every stage of the production process. They have an amazing selection of Irish woollen throws and scarves in both traditional and contemporary styles, all in their distinctive colors ranging from muted to vivid. Along with many other high-quality crafts, they carry a large selection of wool sweaters, tweed caps, socks, and gloves.
